NOW TORONTO: The Stranger, starring Yerzhan Nurymbet, is classic festival fare.

Tursunov delivers a stunning meditation on alienation and social stigma in this story of Ilyas (Yerzhan Nurymbet), a survivor of Kazakhstan’s famine in the 30s. As two decades go by he remains unaware of Stalin’s rise, the Second World War and even the most basic technological developments.

It’s spectacularly shot – a sequence in which starving young Ilyas kills a mountain goat is harrowingly beautiful – but Tursunov has more on his mind that simple struggle, including some sly commentary on art as deception.

True festival fare.
